2024 Italy Trip Favorites

My personal favorites from my 2024 trip to Italy. The trip covered most of the country, starting in Napoli (Naples) and ending in Venezia (Venice). Each photo is from a different location and shows the diversity of the landscape and urban environments that is surprising for such a small country. But this makes Italy an amazing place to travel to.

The ancient city of Matera
Porto di Cetara. This delightful small town on the south coast near Amalfi is one of the most beautiful places one can travel to. Not too busy, but stunning views abound.
A unique view in the city of Pompeii, contrasting the ruins of an ancient, once buried city, with the modern cityscape of the surrounding area.
Sunset on the Amalfi coast. This photo is only a glimpse into what the area around this region of the Mediterranean has to offer.
Sunrise overlooking the city of Salerno. Required hiking up at mountain racing the sun, but was quite an amazing experience.
Balcony night views off the coast of Sorrento looking toward Napoli. The beams of light were a party taking place at a hotel closer to the beach.
A familiar sight for the city of Rome. The Colosseum. But without all the people. How? Well that's my secret.
Castel Sant'Angelo. A Castle in Rome. Seen with Ponte in the foreground (unfortunately under construction at the time) but beautiful nonetheless.
Ah.. Firenze (Florence). What a beautiful city in the Tuscan region of Italy. Beautiful city, wonderful people, and the best food. Seen here from the famous Piazzale Michelangelo.
The lean of this tower is what gave this small town international interest. It really is about to fall over!
Vernazza, one of the Cinque Terre (or five cities) on the northwest coast. Quite a view at sunset.
Vernazza again, from a different perspective. Long exposure and a colorful sky really bring out the view from this angle.
Vernazza, looking out over the Mediterranean toward Algeria, Morocco, and Spain eventually. I was surprised how still this bird was standing and wanted to capture it. over the 8 second exposure, the bird did not move at all, as you can see by zooming in.
The final photo of Vernazza in this series. Night doesn't make this city any less beautiful.
Manarola, another city in the Cinque Terre. Similar to Vernazza, but with its own beauty.
Castello Scaligero, a renaissance castle on Lake Garda. At night, it is especially wonderful to see, and in the day, you can climb to the top of the watch tower to get wonderful views of the lake.

Lake Garda from just in front of the Roman villa. What a view now, and would have been back then as well.
Ferrara di Monte Baldo. An amazing church built, quite literally, on the edge of a cliff. You have to admire the Italian ability to build a church just about anywhere.
There is no other city quite like Venezia. You hear about it, see it in the movies, think you understand it. But nothing compares to experiencing the city built on the water, with boats filling the role of trash truck, taxi, bus, and even personal family transport.
A timeless photo of a group of Gondola water boatmen. A familiar sight as far back as the Renaissance.
Sunset from the San Marco Campanile, a tower that actually collapsed in modern history and had to be rebuilt from the original bricks. the view from this tower at sunset is quite extraordinary, if you can fight your way to the front of the crowds.
One of the most amazing experiences for me as a photographer, being able to capture an intense lightning strike at night from the San Marco Campanile.
